Mary Johnson makes slip decorated, earthenware pots designed for the home and garden using traditional techniques applied with contemporary and unusual themes.

The pots are decorated with oxides, slips, sprigging, trailing and scrafitto. Using images drawn directly from her sketchbook, Mary paints a picture of her world, focusing on creatures, objects and discarded tools found in the back gardens and allotments of Derby.

The pots celebrate earwigs and woodlice and admire brussel sprouts and rusted wheelbarrows as equal partners in the landscape, without which our lives would be quite sterile. They are filled with working class traditions and contemporary concerns for environment and sustainability.
