Call for entries: Salisbury Arts Centre 2012 Open Exhibition
Category: Exhibition Opportunities

30 October - 16 December, Salisbury Arts Centre

Artists and designers at all stages of their careers are invited to submit work for Salisbury Arts Centre's 2012 Open Exhibition, which this year is about design and sustainability. A panel of professionals, including Kate Goldsworthy (artist and researcher at Central St Martins College of Art & Design), Hannah Woodhams (Chair of Wiltshire Design Network) and Alastair Swanwick (Managing Director, Innovate Product Design Ltd) will select the most innovative, imaginative and well executed of entries across the spectrum of design applications including products, fashion, and architecture.  They are looking for works that are either fully realised, at least to prototype stage, or represented in an engaging and highly developed visual form. They could be unique works or items with potential for mass production.  Selected works will be shown in the unique setting of Salisbury Arts Centre and the most popular (by public vote) will receive a cash prize.

All over the age of 16 are welcome to apply and multiple applications are accepted.  There are no geographical restrictions. Individual and group applications are welcome.

Theme
The theme is 'designs for a future'. How you interpret this is up to you. It could be about creating new applications for existing materials including 'upcycling'; art works using techniques or materials from the cutting edge of scientific or technological new developments; or imaginative adaptations to make items fit for a likely or possible future context. The only stipulation is that the design should be a physical or sensory 'object' (softwares and digital designs will only be considered where they have a physical output or context).

Criteria
Entries will be assessed on the following:

  • relevance to the theme
  • imaginative and innovative use of materials and approach
  • Strength of vision
  • Quality of presentation - we are looking for work which is striking, engaging and will contribute to an aesthetically strong exhibition
  • Clarity of communication of the design problem and solution - as a community arts centre we are looking for work that is accessible, can be understood by and inspire a wide range of audiences.

How to apply:
