Laura Ellen Bacon's new installation at Chatsworth
Categories: Design Factory Member News , Exhibitions

Design Factory designer/maker member Laura Ellen Bacon has recently completed her new installation 'Woven Space.'

The project is created from woven willow and was built completely on site in November 2009, knotting and interlacing the willow strands into the branches of the Yew trees in the garden.

The work has been made at Chatsworth at the invitation of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and the Chatsworth House Trust and visitors are welcome to go in search of this partly hidden work.

Laura Ellen Bacon said "I have been weaving sculptural forms in the landscape for several years, which are often large enough to climb inside. This cluster of trees seemed to offer an 'architectural' experience when I first pushed my way through the dark branches and meandered through the tall spaces in-between the limbs of the trees.

Whilst I have regularly woven my work from the inside out, I have never before had the opportunity to create work purely about the internal view and the experience of being inside a woven interior.  I have aimed for the viewer to experience the space as much as just seeing it, intending for the work to carry notions of enclosure, dens and nesting."

Laura's creation is only one of many sculptures available to view in the grounds of Chatsworth House.

Chatsworth House closes on 23rd December for the winter period and will re-open 14th March 2010.

Laura's piece will be available to view until 18th April 2010.
