Crafts=Skills for Life is a pilot educational project which involves matching 3 artists with 3 Birmingham educational partners to explore the impact that being involved in a practical crafts project has on the learning of the key stage 3 pupils (11 – 13 years old) and also the effect that the presence of girls has on the learning achievements of boys.
Following a selection day in January 2009, in which the children were able to feed in to discussions about who they want to work with, the artists selected to work on the project have been named as:
- Design Factory designer/maker member and ceramicist Andrew Tanner
- Jamie Lewis, a textile artist and
- Will Evans, a jewellery maker.
They will start work with pupils from Braidwood School for the Deaf, Wheelers Lane Technology College and the Ishango Science Club over the next few months to develop and make products which can be marketed and sold.
