Get crafty & celebrate Olympics in new pop-up knitting space
Categories: Events , Exhibitions

Do you know your knit from your purl or are you a complete knitting novice eager to learn a new skill?

Textile artist Sara Fowles and Stitches and Hos are looking for existing knitters and those who wish to learn a new craft to contribute to a spectacular knit graffiti installation that will welcome and celebrate the Jamaican and American teams stay in Birmingham this summer for London 2012.

A new pop-up space will open in the Pavilions Shopping Centre on Wednesday 2nd May, a relaxing drop-in space where anyone can come to contribute to K2TOG - Knit 2 Together an Olympic knit graffiti project which will see the lower columns of the exterior of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery covered in knit graffiti. Staff will be on hand to teach knitting skills and special knitting packs will be available to take away in order to contribute to the piece.

The space will be open from 2nd May to 27th July. For K2TOG a pallet of six colours (red, blue, white, yellow, green and black) will be used. The colours are on both of the teams' national flags and also the same used in the Olympic rings logo. It has been estimated that it will take 1,300 balls of wool and 4, 500 hours to make the installation. The project has been chosen to be part of Kalaboration, celebrating the forthcoming 2012 Olympics and the 50th Anniversary of Jamaican Independence.

The piece will be knitted by the people, a colourful, personal, visually spectacular welcome to the teams. Individuals, schools, colleges and community groups from across the region, existing knitters and those who have never picked up a pair of knitting needles are invited to contribute to the piece. The piece will be unveiled to coincide with the beginning of the Olympics, and will remain until the end of September.

The organisers are also currently crowd-funding in order to raise money needed to help fund workshops for the piece to be made. It will also help to fund the pop-up space. Those wishing to donate to the project should visit: http://tinyurl.com/Knit2Together
